Vienna IV 2024 has come to a close, marking another exciting chapter in the history of one of Europe’s largest and most competitive debating tournaments. Held from May 16 to May 18, this year’s event not only showcased exceptional debating talent from across the globe but also celebrated a significant victory for us: For the first time, we won our own tournament!
The winning team, Working Class A, was a mixed team composed of Dylan McCarthy from Dublin and Marina Kojić from Vienna. Seeing our club members on the winning team was incredibly exciting and truly special for everyone involved.
The Grand Final featured a gripping debate on whether we, as the leader of a small medieval city state, should fight or surrender to an incoming strong invading force. Working Class A (Dylan McCarthy, Marina Kojić) as the Opening Opposition faced strong competition from Zagreb TBA (Teck Wei Tan, Tin Puljić) in Opening Government, Like and Subscribe (Rumen Marinov, Niki Angelov) in Closing Government and Oxford mysterious & mischievous (Elena Radulescu, Aidan Woo) in Closing Opposition.
You can look up all motions, breaking teams and results here – we’d be remiss not to highlight our very own Mira Eberdorfer, Paula Breyer and Victor Bervoets who all broke as judges!
Vienna IV is famous for its vibrant social events, and this year was no exception:
Schnitzel Dinner: The traditional schnitzel dinner on Saturday night was a delicious highlight that gave everyone a true taste of Vienna.
Eurovision Social on Saturday: Over a hundred international debaters gathered at Plutzer Bräu in Vienna’s 7th district to watch the Eurovision Song Contest together. It was an unforgettable evening of music, fun, and laughter – thanks to Moonanas for helping us put it together!
Karaoke Night on Sunday: Participants showcased their singing talents, celebrating the end of the tournament with music and camaraderie. This social at Café Kreuzberg is one of the big highlights every year.
Organizing the tournament was a massive team effort, expertly led by Aleksandra Durbazeva and Theo Dorfner, along with too many of our members to reasonably count or list here. The tournament’s Chief Adjudicators (CA) were composed of Đorđe Radosavljević, Jessica Musulin, Lucy Murphy, Ayal Mor, Zach Godley-McAvoy and our very own Victor Bervoets. Their dedication to the success of the tournament was incredible.
We’d like to extend a huge thank you to our incredible Chief of Tab, Nora Flynn-McIver, and our dedicated equity officers, Alishba Irfan, Vladimira Suflaj, and Katie Kiely. Their hard work behind the scenes ensured that Vienna IV 2024 ran smoothly and fairly, and we truly appreciate their commitment and effort in making this event a success.
Hosting Vienna IV 2024 was a lot of hard work and we are immensely proud of what we achieved together and grateful for the support from our organizing team, volunteers, sponsors, and of course, the debaters.
We hope to see you all again next year for Vienna IV 2025!
